Dean Cundey Interview (The Thing, Halloween) London Comic Con 2018


At the 2018 London Comic Con we sat down with legendary cinematographer and film director Dean Cundey — famous for his collaborations with John Carpenter, Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis and his extensive work in the horror genre — to discuss his illustrious career and discover what he thinks of prequels and sequels of his original works.

Dean Raymond Cundey, A.S.C. (born March 12th, 1946) reigns supreme as one of the best, most prolific and talented cinematographers to ever grace celluloid with his often striking and accomplished photography. He received much attention and accolades for his exemplary work on five films for John Carpenter. In “Halloween” (1978), Cundey’s expert use of a fluid prowling camera — one of the first-ever uses of what became known as a Steadicam — became a key motif in a spate of slasher pictures made in this breakthrough independent smash’s influential wake. His other collaborations with Carpenter include “The Fog” (1980), “Escape from New York” (1981), “The Thing” (1982) and “Big Trouble in Little China” (1986). Cundey’s pairing with Robert Zemeckis produced likewise impressive results: “Romancing the Stone” (1984), all three “Back to the Future” features, “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” (1988) — for which he was nominated for an Oscar for his outstanding contributions — and “Death Becomes Her” (1992). Other films Cundey has served as a director of photography on are “Halloween II” (1981), “Halloween III: Season of the Witch” (1982), “Psycho II” (1983), “Warning Sign” (1985), “Road House” (1989), “Hook” (1991), “Jurassic Park” (1993), “Apollo 13” (1995) and “Garfield” (2004). He made his directorial debut with the straight-to-video sequel “Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves!” (1997). Cundey handled Second-Unit Director chores on both “Deep Rising” (1998) and “Garfield 2” (2006). Cundey was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” and has been nominated for numerous BAFTAs and BSC Awards.

Von Babasin is a talented Visual Effects artist who worked with Dean Cundey on “The Thing.” He contributed to other Universal Studios pictures, including “Airport ’77” (1977), “Jaws 2” (1978), “The Incredible Shrinking Woman” (1981) and “Airport ’79” (1979). Babasin also lent his talents on dozens of television series such as “Battlestar Gallactica” (1978-1979), “Buck Rogers” (1979-1981), “Knightrider” (1982-1986), “The Rockford Files” (1974–1980), “Baa Baa Black Sheep” (1974) and “The Incredible Hulk” (1978–1982) to name a few. His Father’s substantial influence on Jazz history led Babasin, also musically inclined, to produce a documentary about his life and career called “Harry Babasin’s Jazz in Hollywood.” This huge undertaking has meant that Babasin has had to be Producer, Director, Writer, Editor, Bassist and Composer.
