The Convention Junkies were honoured to interview stars of the Canadian hit comedy television series “Corner Gas Animated” — Eric Peterson (Oscar Leroy), Lorne Cardinal (Sgt. Davis Quinton), Nancy Robertson (Wanda Dollard), Tara Spencer-Nairn (Officer Karen Pelly) and Brent Butt (Brent Herbert Leroy) — about the show, how it differs from the live-action version, and their experience at their FIRST EVER convention appearance at the 2019 Fan Expo Canada in Toronto.
When creator and comedian Brent Butt first scribbled his idea for a TV show on a piece of scrap paper, little did he know that he was about to create some of the most beloved characters in Canadian television history – Oscar Leroy (Eric Peterson), Emma Leroy (Corrine Koslo/Janet Wright), Lacey Burrows (Gabrielle Miller), Hank Yarbo (Fred Ewanuick), Davis Quinton (Lorne Cardinal), Karen Pelly (Tara Spencer-Nairn), Wanda Dollard (Nancy Robertson) – and change the landscape of Canadian television.
CORNER GAS, the original series created for CTV and The Comedy Network, premiered on January 22, 2004 to 1.15 million viewers and became a runaway hit. For six seasons – and 107 episodes – the comedy about a bunch of nobodies who get up to a whole lot of nothing in the fictional prairie town of Dog River, Saskatchewan, was the #1 Canadian sitcom in Canada. The series finale on April 13, 2009, made television history when a record-breaking 3.02 million viewers tuned in. It was a new audience high for CORNER GAS and the largest audience on record for a Canadian scripted television series.
CORNER GAS: THE MOVIE continued to blaze new trails. In December 2014, the film sold out 100 theatres across Canada and reached over 7 million TV viewers, ultimately winning the coveted Golden Screen Award for most-watched Canadian Drama / Comedy Program at the 2016 Canadian Screen Awards.
CORNER GAS ANIMATED is the reboot of the iconic series featuring the residents of Dog River in new animated adventures. Brent, Lacey, Oscar, Hank, Davis, Karen, Wanda and Emma all got a cartoon makeover. It debuted on The Comedy Network on April 2, 2018 and became the network’s #1 original series of all time. Season 2, debuted July 1, 2019, and enjoyed the same track record.
The franchise has garnered an International Emmy nomination and won numerous awards, including: a Canadian Screen Award; a Golden Screen Award; seven Gemini Awards (including Best Comedy Series and Best Ensemble Performance); nine Canadian Comedy Awards; four Writers Guild of Canada Awards; three Directors Guild of Canada Awards; and 13 Leos.
In Canada, the entire franchise (107 episodes of the six-season CORNER GAS, CORNER GAS: THE MOVIE and both seasons of CORNER GAS ANIMATED) can be streamed exclusively on Crave. In the United States and around the world, only the original series and the movie may be streamed on Amazon Prime Video. The animated series is, unfortunately, only available in Canada at this time.
