Maidreamin maids Hima, Mariru and Peace discuss maid café culture and share their experiences with eager fans at their 2018 Fan Expo Canada panel in Toronto.
Maid cafés (メイド喫茶 / メイドカフェ Meido kissa / Meido kafe) are a subcategory of cosplay restaurants found predominantly in Japan. In these cafés, waitresses dressed in maid costumes act as servants and treat customers as masters (and mistresses) in a private home, rather than as café patrons. Maid cafés have become increasingly popular since the first permanent one was established in Akihabara, Tokyo, Japan in March 2001, so the increased competition has resulted in unusual tactics to attract customers. They have also expanded overseas to countries like China, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Australia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, France, the Netherlands, Mexico, Canada, Brazil and the United States.
“Maidreamin” is one of the largest Maid café restaurant chains in Japan and employs over 450 maids at 16 restaurants in Japan and Thailand alone. Its restaurants have won multiple awards from Trip Advisor for their family-friendly service and fun activities for every master and princess who enters their maid café dreamland. Each restaurant is designed around a different creative visual theme and features daily live performances from the most energetic and talented maids in Japan. Maidreamin performs at multiple overseas events where they demonstrate the traditions and excitement of maid cafe culture, and their musical performance unit “Quality Service Cleanliness Smile (QSCS)” performs regularly at their Japanese stores and at Anime events internationally.
MAID HIMA was recently chosen as one of the best 10 maids of Maidreamin in Tokyo, Japan. She usually performs in Fukuoka/Kyushu area and has a strong Fukuokan accent. Her favorite food is chocolate and strawberries! MAID MARIRU is the leader of Maidreamin. She loves Akihabara — the famous district in Tokyo where she lives. MAID PEACE is the TOP of all 450 maids at Maidreamin, having been selected as the Moe Kawaii Queen for three years straight!
